Subject: Coping with exam time, anxiety, depression, suicidality, bereavement etc. PLEASE NOTE: UPDATED NUMBER FOR AKESO PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES is 0861 HELP US (4357 87)

Dear Colleagues

In terms of the traumatic and stressful time …and pre exam time ,this info may be useful for students :

The link below will open on the CCDU counselling site info. On the site there are links to depression, suicide; anxiety, academic stress . http://www.wits.ac.za/ccdu/counselling-at-the-ccdu/reach-out-/

I have tried sending the leaflets but they are too large to send by email but I will try sending separately.

We have sent out the relevant leaflets and posters to Residences and info on CCDU has been sent to each student

Please Note ,The “Reach Out” Poster needs to be updated with the AKESO updated number of AKESO PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES is 0861 HELP US (4357 87). The one on that poster is incorrect now. The other attached “Help for Suicide” posters have the correct number. These have been put up around campus during the year but get pulled down.

Kind Regards

Anne

INAUGURAL LECTURE: SEARCHING FOR THE EARLIEST TETRAPODS IN GONDWANA

Professor Roger Smith from the Evolutionary Studies Institute at Wits and the Iziko South African Museum in Cape Town will present his inaugural lecture on the evolution of terrestrial vertebrates. One of the important unresolved research questions relating to the evolution of life on land is: What were the earliest terrestrial vertebrates to inhabit Gondwana? To answer this question, Smith and a multinational team of palaeontologists have spent several field seasons looking for 300 million year old fossil bones in the hyper-arid Huab river valley of western Namibia, and in the steaming jungles of north-east Brazil. The lecture will illustrate how fieldwork was conducted in these very different locations, report on current progress in preparing and identifying the new finds, and finish with a discussion of the evolutionary significance of these previously unknown animal communities.

Time: 17:30 for 18:00
Venue: Senate Room, 2nd Floor, Solomon Mahlangu House, Braamfontein Campus East
