INAUGURAL LECTURE: BIG DATA AND PUBLIC HEALTH RESEARCH: TRACING THE FUZZY CONTOURS OF DATA OWNERSHIP AND RELATED INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS

The inaugural lecture of Professor Pamela Andanda will shed light on big data in public health research. Big data enables health care providers to monitor individuals and systems in real-time. However, the challenge is how to overcome the barriers to using such data in public health research. This calls for an alternative normative framework capable of reconciling stakeholders’ competing interests while ensuring fair access with minimal legal and ethical risks.

THE DEAN’S CONCERT

The Dean’s Concert is an initiative of the Faculty of Humanities and aims to raise funds for financially disadvantaged first-year music students at Wits. The programme consists of Western classical music, jazz and popular music performed by students from the Wits School of Arts. Students compete for monetary prizes sponsored by the present Dean of Humanities, Professor Ruksana Osman. All welcome.
